Blood Transfusion
A blood transfusion is a safe and common medical procedure where donated blood is given to a patient through a vein (usually in the arm). This could be a planned procedure or be done in an emergency. It’s like topping up your body’s blood supply to help you feel stronger and better.
Each unit of blood is carefully tested and matched to the patient’s blood type before transfusion.
When Are Blood Transfusions Needed?
People may need a blood transfusion for many reasons, including:
🩸 Severe blood loss from accidents, surgery, or childbirth.
💉 Serious anaemia — when the body does not have enough healthy red blood cells.
💔 Blood disorders, such as Thalassemia or Sickle Cell Disease.
🎗️ Cancer treatment which can lower blood counts.
⚕️ Chronic illnesses that affect the bone marrow (where blood cells are made).
In each case, the transfusion helps restore healthy red blood cells so the body can carry oxygen and function properly.
Why People with Blood Disorders Need More Frequent Transfusions
People living with blood disorders — like Beta Thalassemia Major or Sickle Cell Disease — often need regular blood transfusions to stay healthy.
Their bodies cannot make enough normal red blood cells or haemoglobin, which means:
- They become anaemic (low energy and pale skin).
- Their organs do not get enough oxygen.
- They may not grow or develop properly without treatment.
For children, regular transfusions are especially important.
🧒🏽 Every transfusion helps them:
- Have more energy to play, learn, and grow.
- Stay healthy and avoid complications from anaemia.
- Live fuller, more active lives.
Why Your Donation Matters
Because patients with blood disorders need transfusions every few weeks, there is a constant demand for safe, donated blood.
💞 Your donation gives life to someone who depends on it — especially children who need ongoing care.
👉 Give blood. Share life. Help someone live another day.
